The Excellence of the Earthen Śiva Liṅga
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Sthala Purana: Doctrinal ranking: among described liṅgas, the pārthiva (devotee-made earthen) liṅga is declared uttama; its worship yields siddhi to many.
Significance: Promises siddhi (spiritual accomplishment) through accessible worship; underscores that bhakti and correct upacāra can make even a temporary liṅga a powerful locus of grace.
Role: liberating
Offering: pushpa
The verse elevates the Pārthiva (earthen) Liṅga as a supremely accessible form of Saguna Shiva, showing that sincere devotion expressed through simple materials can mature into siddhi—spiritual fulfillment and nearness to Shiva (Pati).
It explicitly endorses Liṅga-upāsanā by stating that among the described Liṅgas, the earthen Liṅga is foremost—highlighting Saguna worship as an effective means for purification, devotion, and Shiva’s grace.
It implies Pārthiva Liṅga pūjā—forming a clay Liṅga and worshipping it with devotion, ideally supported by japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and simple offerings such as water and bilva leaves.
