Bondage and Liberation: The Prakṛti–Karma Wheel and Śiva as the Transcendent Cause
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Highlights epistemic humility: the full taxonomy of liṅgas is ultimately known only to Śiva; human teaching proceeds by partial revelation—an implicit reminder that grace (anugraha) is needed to pierce concealment (tirodhāna).
Role: teaching
It establishes Śiva as the supreme knower (Pati) of ultimate reality, while allowing partial instruction through tradition—guiding devotees to approach the mystery of Śiva through accessible forms like the Liṅga.
It frames the Liṅga as a concrete, worship-worthy manifestation within the world (bhūvikāra), through which devotees can approach Saguna Śiva, even though Śiva’s full nature ultimately transcends complete description.
A practical takeaway is Liṅga-upāsanā with devotion—especially japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) while contemplating Śiva as both immanent in the Liṅga and beyond all limiting descriptions.
