Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating Śiva Purāṇa teachings to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: As this is in the Viśveśvarasaṃhitā, the ritual instruction is naturally read in the orbit of Kāśī Viśvanātha: prosperity (saṃpad) is framed as Śiva’s grace obtained through worship plus dāna/annadāna to brāhmaṇas, a hallmark of Kāśī’s tīrtha-dharma.
Significance: Seeking saṃpad (prosperity), auspiciousness, and steadiness of household welfare through Śiva’s anugraha supported by feeding brāhmaṇas (dāna as a purifier of karma).
Shakti Form: Lalitā
Role: nurturing
Offering: naivedya
It teaches that prosperity (saṃpad) is supported by dharma: worship aligned with sacred time (Monday, dear to Śiva) and compassionate giving through anna-dāna (feeding honored guests), which purifies karma and steadies devotion.
Somavāra is traditionally connected with Śiva’s saguna worship, especially Liṅga-pūjā. The verse presents a complete devotional arc—pūjā followed by service (bhojana/dāna)—showing that Liṅga worship is fulfilled by outward acts of reverence and charity.
A Monday observance: perform worship for auspicious prosperity and conclude with vipra-bhojana—feeding brāhmaṇas (with their wives) using ghee-prepared food—emphasizing charity as an integral limb of worship.
