सेवातत्त्वप्रश्नः — The Question of Whom to Serve (Sevā) for the Removal of Suffering
तावच्च प्रतिमा पूज्य यावद्विज्ञानसंभवः । ज्ञानाभावेन पूज्येत पतनं तस्य निश्चितम्
tāvacca pratimā pūjya yāvadvijñānasaṃbhavaḥ | jñānābhāvena pūjyeta patanaṃ tasya niścitam
Pratima (arca/imej suci) hendaklah disembah hanya selagi vijñāna—kesedaran pembezaan yang lebih tinggi—belum muncul. Tetapi jika seseorang terus beribadat semata-mata kerana ketiadaan pengetahuan sejati, maka kejatuhan rohaninya pasti berlaku.
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating Shiva’s teaching within the Sṛṣṭi-khaṇḍa context)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga legend; it articulates a soteriological ladder: arcā-worship as upāya until vijñāna (discriminative realization) arises.
Significance: General teaching for pilgrims: temple worship is a means toward inner realization; clinging to mere externalism without inner transformation is spiritually counterproductive.
Role: teaching
It teaches that pratimā-worship is a sacred support for the seeker until inner realization dawns; the goal is transformation into living knowledge of Shiva, not mechanical ritual devoid of understanding.
It affirms Saguna worship (including the Śiva-liṅga) as a valid means for purification and devotion, while emphasizing that it should mature into vijñāna—direct, discriminative awareness of Shiva as the highest Reality.
Perform Śiva-pūjā with contemplation and study: repeat the Pañcākṣarī mantra ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya") with meaning, and let external worship become inner worship through meditation on Shiva’s presence.
