The Determination of Śiva as the Meaning of Praṇava
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
Significance: By performing pitṛ-tarpaṇa and piṇḍa-dāna with śraddhā and proper injunctions, the bound soul (paśu) accrues puṇya and supports ancestral welfare, which is treated as dharma conducive to worldly stability and eligibility for higher Śaiva sādhana.
Offering: naivedya
It emphasizes disciplined, tradition-aligned Shraddha: offering piṇḍas separately and with akṣata to strengthen the Pitṛs’ auspicious state, which supports the performer’s dharma and purification—an aid to steady Shaiva sādhanā.
In Shaiva Purana practice, honoring Pitṛs is part of dharmic living that stabilizes the householder’s life; such purity and order become supportive conditions for Saguna Shiva worship (Linga-pūjā) and for progressing toward Shiva’s grace.
A Shraddha-style procedure: offer piṇḍas one by one according to one’s Gṛhya method and include akṣata; inwardly maintain reverence and gratitude to the ancestral line while dedicating the merit toward auspiciousness.
