Inside Sukta 13

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is hailed as ‘fortunate’ (subhaga), from whom all felicities stream forth—wealth, victory-power, rain, and the ordered flow of waters.

  2. Development

The hymn links cosmic order to ritual approach: the worshipper who reaches Agni’s keen efficacy at the altar through hymns, chants, and sacrifice gains access to every desirable ‘opening’ and sustenance.

  3. Climax

The decisive claim that the rightly worshipping mortal ‘holds the grain’ (dhānya) and becomes master of wealth—Agni’s favor concretely reorders life toward abundance and stability.

  4. Where it settles

A direct closing prayer for child, lineage, and complete fulfilment (pūrti), ending in a tone of confident rejoicing and heroic vitality (suvīrāḥ).

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the luminous priest (hotṛ), the “son of strength” (sūnúḥ sahasaḥ), kindled at the altar and praised as adorable (īḍya) and as the bearer of offerings to the gods. He is portrayed as the source from which blessings ‘fly forth’ like birds, and as the sharp, effective power reached by worship at the vedi.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods; transformer of offerings into divine nourishment; sustainer of ṛta through light, heat, and the sacrificial order that supports rain, waters, and prosperity.
  • Inner significanceAwakened will and discernment—the inner fire that hears (śruṣṭī), concentrates intention, removes obstruction, and converts aspiration into tangible fulfilment (pūrti).
