The Intensification of the Rama–Ravana Duel
शरान् खरमुखांश्चान्यान्वराहमुखसंश्रितान् ।।6.100.43।।श्वानकुक्कुटवक्त्रांश्चमकराशीविषाननान् ।एतांश्चान्यांश्चमायावीससर्जनिशितान् शरान् ।।6.100.44।।रामंप्रतिमहातेजाःक्रुद्धस्सर्पइवश्वसन् ।
śarān kharamukhāṃś cānyān varāhamukhasaṃśritān || 6.100.43 ||
śvānakukkuṭavaktrāṃś ca makarāśīviṣānanān |
etāṃś cānyāṃś ca māyāvī sasarja niśitān śarān || 6.100.44 ||
rāmaṃ prati mahātejāḥ kruddhaḥ sarpa iva śvasan |
Maka yang maha perkasa itu, penuh tipu-daya, murka dan mendesis seperti ular, melepaskan ke arah Rāma anak-anak panah yang tajam: ada yang bermuka keldai, ada yang bermuka babi hutan; ada yang bermuka anjing dan ayam jantan; dan ada pula yang menyerupai makara serta ular berbisa, beserta banyak lagi yang lain.
Arrows having lion and tiger face, buzzards and red geese face, eagles and falcons faced, in the same way arrows with jackals' face, wolves' face, terrible with mouth wide open five headed serpent like fearful sharp arrows were released by Ravana.
The passage contrasts deceit and rage with righteous conduct: dharma avoids māyā-driven aggression and upholds integrity and self-control even in war.
Rāvaṇa continues the assault with more grotesque, fearsome missiles, explicitly directed against Rāma.
Rāma’s implied virtue is composure under provocation; the verse spotlights Rāvaṇa’s lack of that virtue through anger and deceit.
