FAQs

It advises careful association: avoid intimate proximity and shared food arrangements with people whose character is harmful—especially the foolish, the arrogant, and those who pursue others’ spouses.

These are markers of closeness and trust in traditional dharma literature. The verse warns that intimacy and shared hospitality with unethical people can corrupt one’s conduct and invite social and moral harm.

It is targeted, not universal: it cautions against close association with specific harmful dispositions (folly, arrogance, sexual misconduct), framing the guidance as protective ethical discipline (sadācāra).
