Durvasa’s Curse, the Churning of the Ocean, and Lakshmi’s Manifestation
Chapter 4
ततो विषं समुत्पन्नं कालकूटं भयावहं । तेन चैवार्दितास्सर्वे दानवाः सह दैवतैः
tato viṣaṃ samutpannaṃ kālakūṭaṃ bhayāvahaṃ | tena caivārditāssarve dānavāḥ saha daivataiḥ
Kemudian timbullah racun yang menggerunkan—Kālakūṭa, amat menakutkan sifatnya; dan olehnya semua tersiksa, para Dānava bersama para Deva.
Narrator (within the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa creation/churning account; specific dialogue-speaker not identifiable from the single verse alone)
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: celestial_realm
Sandhi Resolution Notes: चैव = च + एव; आर्दितास्सर्वे = आर्दिताः + सर्वे (विसर्ग-सन्धिः: ः + स → स् + स).
It describes the emergence of the terrible poison Kālakūṭa during the Samudra-manthana (churning of the ocean), which afflicts both Devas and Dānavas.
The verse emphasizes the indiscriminate, cosmic scale of Kālakūṭa—its harmful force impacts all participants in the churning, regardless of faction.
Even pursuits aimed at great rewards can first release danger; the verse underscores the need for responsibility, restraint, and divine aid when confronting consequences that affect everyone.
