Unspecified (addressing Devī; likely Śiva/Maheśvara speaking to Pārvatī in a Śaiva–Śākta dialogue frame within the Purāṇa)

Concept: Dharma is integral to Viṣṇu (Mādhava); contemplation and protection of dharma are devotional acts upheld by the gods.

Application: Make dharma a daily sādhana: reflect before action (‘does this protect truth, fairness, compassion?’) and actively defend dharma in family/work through integrity and non-harm.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"In a serene teaching moment, the narrator addresses Devī seated on a lotus-like seat, while a subtle vision of Mādhava appears behind them—Viṣṇu’s form composed of luminous ‘dharma’ motifs. The gods stand in respectful rows, hands folded, as if guarding an invisible pillar of order that holds the worlds.","primary_figures":["Mādhava (Viṣṇu) as a visionary presence","Devī (Pārvatī)","Mahādeva or a ṛṣi teacher","Devas (Indra, Varuṇa, etc. as attendants)"],"setting":"Celestial assembly with lotus pillars and a faint mandala suggesting dharma as cosmic architecture.","lighting_mood":"temple lamp-lit with divine radiance","color_palette":["deep indigo","marigold gold","sandalwood beige","emerald green","lotus rose"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Devī and the teacher in the foreground, Viṣṇu (Mādhava) as a radiant icon behind them; dharma depicted as golden limb-like motifs around Viṣṇu’s body; heavy gold leaf, ruby-red and emerald garments, ornate crowns, symmetrical deity arrangement, traditional South Indian temple arch (prabhāvali).","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate satsanga scene with Devī listening, the teacher gesturing gently; a translucent Viṣṇu vision in the sky; delicate floral borders, cool blues and soft pinks, refined facial features, minimal but lyrical celestial landscape.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines, Viṣṇu with śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma, Devī with characteristic eyes; devas in orderly rows; strong red-yellow-green palette, ornamental frame like a temple mural panel.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central Viṣṇu figure surrounded by lotus medallions labeled as virtues (satya, dayā, ahiṃsā) in decorative script-like motifs; Devī and the teacher at the lower edge; deep blue ground, gold highlights, intricate floral borders, peacocks and lotuses emphasizing sacred order."}

FAQs

The verse presents dharma as inseparable from Viṣṇu’s nature—an essential part of the divine order he embodies and sustains.

It gives a twofold instruction: reflect on dharma inwardly (cintayet) and actively uphold it in conduct and protection (pālayet).

Dharma is not merely to be admired or discussed; it must be consciously maintained in thought and enacted in life, as even the gods model its preservation.
