Mārkaṇḍeya-varṇanam
The Description of Mārkaṇḍeya
Sanatkumāra (teaching Nārada in the dialogue context of Book 1.1)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It elevates nāma-ucchāraṇa (recitation of divine names) as a defining mark of the highest Bhāgavatas, praising devotion that reveres both Hari (Viṣṇu) and Śambhu (Śiva).
Bhakti is shown as a lived practice—repeated remembrance and vocal recitation of God’s names—through which devotees become ‘adorned’ with devotion and recognized as bhāgavatoत्तमāḥ.
Primarily Śikṣā (proper pronunciation in recitation) and Vyākaraṇa (clear articulation of nāma-forms) are implied, since the efficacy of nāma-japa depends on correct, attentive utterance.
