Adhyaya 57 — The Ninefold Divisions of Bharata: Mountains, Rivers, and Peoples

iti śrīmārkaṇḍeyapurāṇe gaṅgāvatāro nāma ṣaṭpañcāśo 'dhyāyaḥ / saptapañcāśo 'dhyāyaḥ—57 / krauṣṭukir uvāca bhagavan! kathitaṃ tv etaj jambūdvīpaṃ samāsataḥ / yad etad bhavatā proktaṃ karma nānyatra puṇyadam
Demikianlah berakhir bab kelima puluh enam daripada Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, yang dinamakan “Turunnya Sungai Gaṅgā”. Kini bab kelima puluh tujuh. Krausṭuki berkata: “Wahai yang mulia, tuan telah merumuskan Jambūdvīpa; dan tuan juga menyatakan bahawa karma tidak mendatangkan pahala kebajikan di tempat lain sebagaimana di sini.”

The question foregrounds a central Purāṇic doctrine: Bhāratavarṣa is the privileged arena for dharma and liberation because karma here yields puṇya/pāpa and thus spiritual progression, unlike in more effortless realms.
It introduces a doctrinal reflection on karma within the cosmographic ('Sarga') narrative; it sets up further exposition on Bhāratavarṣa’s divisions—still within world-description rather than genealogy.
The transition signals a shift from mapping outer space (dvīpa/varṣa) to mapping the inner soteriological space: where actions carry moral weight, consciousness can be refined toward mokṣa.
