Draupadī’s Lament and Indictment of Misfortune
तत् कर्म कृतवानद्य कथं निद्रां निषेवसे । वहाँ पहुँचते ही सैरन्ध्री बोली--आर्यपुत्र! मुझसे द्वेष रखनेवाले उस महापापी सेनापतिके, जिसने मेरे साथ वैसा अपमानजनक बर्ताव किया था, जीते-जी तुम आज नींद कैसे ले रहे हो?
tat karma kṛtavān adya kathaṃ nidrāṃ niṣevase |
“Setelah engkau melakukan perbuatan itu hari ini, bagaimana engkau masih dapat menyerahkan diri kepada tidur?” Demikianlah Saīrandhrī, sebaik tiba di sana, berkata: “Wahai Aryaputra! Panglima yang maha durjana itu—yang memendam kebencian terhadapku dan telah memperlakukan aku dengan penghinaan sedemikian—masih hidup; bagaimana mungkin engkau tidur nyenyak hari ini?”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
A grievous wrong—especially the humiliation of a protected person—creates an ethical urgency: dharma demands timely redress and protection, and complacency (symbolized by sleep) is censured when injustice remains unaddressed.
Sairandhrī (Draupadī in disguise) confronts the hero after reaching him, reproaching him: despite what has occurred and despite the wicked commander who insulted her still being alive, she questions how he can rest instead of acting to punish the offender.
