कलेर्द्वापरस्य च नले प्रति कोपः
Kali and Dvāpara’s Resolve Against Nala
/ ऑ2आ छटर () अऑसन अप पञ्चपञज्चाशत्तमो< ध्याय: नलका दूत बनकर राजमहलमें जाना और दमयन्तीको देवताओंका संदेश सुनाना बृहृदश्च उवाच तेभ्य: प्रतिज्ञाय नलः करिष्य इति भारत । अथैतान् परिपप्रच्छ कृताञज्जलिरुपस्थित:,बृहदश्व मुनि कहते हैं--भारत! देवताओंसे उनकी सहायता करनेकी प्रतिज्ञा करके राजा नलने हाथ जोड़ पास जाकर उनसे पूछा--“आपलोग कौन हैं? और वह कौन व्यक्ति है, जिसके पास जानेके लिये आपने मुझे दूत बनानेकी इच्छा की है तथा आपलोगोंका वह कौन-सा कार्य है, जो मेरे द्वारा सम्पन्न होनेयोग्य है, यह ठीक-ठीक बताइये"
Bṛhadaśva uvāca — Tebhyaḥ pratijñāya Nalaḥ kariṣya iti Bhārata | athaitān paripapraccha kṛtāñjalir upasthitaḥ ||
Bṛhadaśva berkata: “Wahai Bhārata, setelah berjanji kepada para dewa itu, ‘Aku akan melakukannya,’ Raja Nala pun mendekati mereka dengan tangan dirapatkan, lalu bertanya dengan teliti: ‘Siapakah kamu semua? Siapakah orang yang kepadanya kamu ingin mengutus aku sebagai utusan? Dan apakah, tepatnya, tugas yang dapat aku laksanakan? Nyatakanlah dengan jelas.’”

Even after agreeing to help, Nala approaches the gods with humility (kṛtāñjali) and seeks clarity about identity, recipient, and task. The ethical emphasis is on respectful conduct, informed consent, and responsible execution of duty rather than impulsive action.
Within Bṛhadaśva’s narration to Yudhiṣṭhira, Nala has promised assistance to the gods. He then steps forward with folded hands and asks who they are, whom he must approach as their messenger, and what exact work he is to accomplish—setting up the mission that will lead into the Nala–Damayantī episode.
