Skanda–Mātṛgaṇa-janma: Kumārakāḥ, Kanyāgaṇāḥ, and the Vīrāṣṭaka (स्कन्द-मातृगण-सम्भवः)

ऋषिरुवाच नान्यथा भविता शाप एवमेतदसंशयम्‌ | आनृशंस्यात्‌ त्वहं किज्चित्‌ कर्तनुग्रहमद्य ते,ऋषिने कहा--यह शाप टल नहीं सकता। ऐसा होकर ही रहेगा, इसमें संशय नहीं है। परंतु मेरा स्वभाव क्रूर नहीं है, इसलिये मैं तुझपर आज कुछ अनुग्रह करता हूँ

ṛṣir uvāca nānyathā bhavitā śāpa evam etad asaṁśayam | ānṛśaṁsyāt tv ahaṁ kiñcit kartānugraham adya te ||

Resi itu berkata: “Tiada jalan lain—kutukan ini pasti akan berlaku; tiada keraguan tentangnya. Namun, kerana aku bukanlah bersifat kejam dan bertindak atas belas ihsan, hari ini aku akan mengurniakan kepadamu suatu anugerah.”

Even when a consequence (like a curse) is irrevocable, dharma calls for compassion and restraint: power should not be exercised with cruelty, and one should mitigate harm where possible through kindness.

A sage declares that the spoken curse must inevitably take effect, leaving no room for reversal; however, moved by non-cruelty (ānṛśaṁsya), he offers the afflicted person a compensatory favor or boon.
