Kṛṣṇa at Duryodhana’s House: Refusal of Hospitality and Departure to Vidura (कृष्णस्य धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनगमनम्)
विनीतक्रो धहर्षश्न ब्रह्माण्या: सत्यवादिन: । त्यक्त्वा प्रियसुखे पार्था रूवतीमपहाय माम्,'मेरे बेटे हर्ष और क्रोधको जीत चुके थे। वे ब्राह्मणोंका हित-साधन करनेवाले तथा सत्यवादी थे; तथापि (शत्रुओंके अन्यायसे विवश हो) प्रियजन एवं सुखभोगसे मुँह मोड़ मुझे रोती-बिलखती छोड़कर वे वनकी ओर चल दिये
Vaiśampāyana uvāca — vinīta-krodha-harṣāś ca brāhmaṇyāḥ satya-vādinaḥ | tyaktvā priya-sukhe pārthā ruvatīm apahāya mām vanaṃ prati yayuḥ ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana berkata: “Para Pārtha telah menaklukkan amarah dan kegirangan yang meluap; mereka berbakti demi kebajikan para brāhmaṇa dan teguh berkata benar. Namun, dipaksa oleh kezaliman musuh, mereka berpaling daripada kesenangan dan kemewahan yang dicintai, meninggalkan aku dalam tangisan, lalu berangkat menuju rimba.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Ethical excellence is marked by inner discipline (mastery over anger and elation), truthfulness, and concern for dharmic social order (support of brāhmaṇas). Yet even the righteous may be forced by others’ injustice into painful renunciation—showing that dharma often requires sacrifice rather than comfort.
The narrator describes the Pāṇḍavas as virtuous and self-controlled, but explains that due to the wrongdoing of their enemies they abandon beloved pleasures and depart for the forest, leaving their mother behind in grief.
