Reconciling Contingency and Human Effort
अध: पादतलेनैतानधिष्ठास्यामि भूतले । पाण्डवोंके प्रति आततायी बने हुए इन समस्त क्षत्रियोंको, जो युद्धके लिये उद्यत हुए हैं, मैं नीचे पृथ्वीपर गिराकर पैरोंतले रौंद डालूँगा
adhaḥ pādatale naitān adhiṣṭhāsyāmi bhūtale |
Bhīmasena mengisytiharkan: “Para kṣatriya yang telah menjadi ātātāyin terhadap kaum Pāṇḍava dan bersiap untuk perang—akan aku hempaskan ke bumi dan aku pijak lumat di bawah telapak kakiku.”
भीमसेन उवाच
The verse presents Bhīma’s resolve to punish those deemed ātātāyins—aggressors against the Pāṇḍavas—suggesting that force in war is framed as dharmic when directed against grave wrongdoing, though it also exposes the intensity and potential excess of martial anger.
In the Udyoga Parva’s war-preparation context, Bhīmasena speaks fiercely, proclaiming that he will throw down and trample the hostile warriors who have taken up arms against the Pāṇḍavas, signaling his readiness for the coming conflict.
