Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 47 — Arjuna’s Deterrent Declaration
Sañjaya’s Report
तमसहां विष्णुमनन्तवीर्य- माशंसते धार्तराष्ट्रो विजेतुम् । सदा होन॑ तर्कयते दुरात्मा तच्चाप्ययं सहते<स्मान् समीक्ष्य
tamasahāṁ viṣṇum anantavīryam āśaṁsate dhārtarāṣṭro vijetum | sadā hīnaḥ tarkayate durātmā tac cāpy ayaṁ sahate ’smān samīkṣya ||
Sañjaya berkata: “Duryodhana, putera Dhṛtarāṣṭra, malah menaruh harapan untuk menewaskan Viṣṇu—Śrī Kṛṣṇa yang berkeperkasaan tanpa batas. Orang yang berhati jahat itu sentiasa merancang keburukan terhadap-Nya; namun Tuhan, setelah memandang kepada kami, terus juga menanggung bahkan penghinaan ini.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the moral blindness of arrogance: Duryodhana imagines he can defeat the divine and continually plots wrongdoing. In contrast, Kṛṣṇa’s restraint and patience show divine forbearance—power governed by dharma rather than impulsive retaliation.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Duryodhana still hopes to overcome Kṛṣṇa and keeps devising harmful plans. Despite this, Kṛṣṇa tolerates the offense, mindful of the wider situation and the people involved.
