Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 34 — Vidura’s Counsel on Deliberation, Speech-Discipline, and Dharmic Kingship

Educational Q&A

Lasting honor in the afterlife is tied to enduring righteous reputation in this world; therefore one should act in dharma so that one’s fame remains worthy of praise.

In Udyoga Parva, Vidura is giving moral and political counsel during the tense pre-war negotiations, reminding the addressed hero/king that true greatness is measured by virtuous fame that outlives the body.
