Educational Q&A

Even a powerful ruler can be constrained by dharma-oriented institutions—elders, ministers, and the public court—to face counsel. The verse highlights the ethical tension between personal obstinacy (akāma) and the duty to submit to deliberation in matters affecting the realm.

After earlier developments in the court, Vidura (as kṣattā) has Duryodhana brought back into the assembly. Duryodhana does not wish to return, yet he is escorted with his brothers and in the presence of surrounding kings, indicating a formal, high-stakes political setting.
