Atithi’s Direction to the Nāga-sage Padma at Naimiṣa

atha hiraṇyakaśipuṁ puraskṛtya viśvarūpamātaraṁ svasāram asurā varam ayācanta—he svasar, ayaṁ te putras tvāṣṭo viśvarūpas triśirā devānāṁ purohitaḥ pratyakṣaṁ devebhyo bhāgam adāt, parokṣam asmākaṁ; tato devā vardhante vayaṁ kṣīyāmas; tad enaṁ tvaṁ vārayitum arhasi tathā yathāsmān bhajed iti.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how power struggles distort dharma: a priest’s obligation to distribute offerings fairly and act with integrity is challenged by partisan demands and family pressure. It warns that concealed favoritism and politicized ritual can shift prosperity and decline between groups, making ethical impartiality a central concern.

The Asuras, led by Hiraṇyakaśipu, approach Viśvarūpa’s mother (their sister) and ask her to influence her three-headed son, who serves as the gods’ priest. They complain that he openly gives the gods their due share while giving the Asuras only indirectly, causing the gods to flourish and the Asuras to weaken, and they urge her to make him switch allegiance.
