Saṃhāra-krama (The Sequence of Cosmic Dissolution) — Yājñavalkya’s Discourse
अनीथ्चवर:ः कथं मुच्येदित्येवं शत्रुकर्शन । वदन्ति कारणै: श्रैष्ठ्यं योगा: सम्पड्मनीषिण:
Bhīṣma uvāca: anīśvarāḥ kathaṁ mucyed ity evaṁ śatrukarśana | vadanti kāraṇaiḥ śraiṣṭhyaṁ yogāḥ sampad-manīṣiṇaḥ ||
Bhishma berkata: “Wahai penunduk musuh, mereka berhujah begini: ‘Bagaimana mungkin seseorang yang menafikan Tuhan (Īśvara) mencapai pembebasan?’ Dengan demikian, para pemikir yang tajam dan mahir beralasan menegakkan keunggulan doktrin Yoga mereka, dengan menegaskan bahawa pengakuan akan realiti Tuhan adalah perlu bagi moksha.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse presents a theistic argument: liberation (moksha) is not possible for one who rejects Īśvara; learned proponents of yoga claim their view is superior because it acknowledges a Lord as essential to release.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction to the king, Bhīṣma reports the reasoning used by certain yogic thinkers: they challenge non-theistic positions by asking how liberation could occur without accepting the existence of a supreme Lord.
