अध्याय २८६ — पराशर-उपदेशः
Ethical Restraint, Mortality, and Karma
एतद् ब्रह्मन् विजानामि महत् कृत्वा तपोडव्ययम् । तेन नारद सम्प्राप्तो न मां शोक: प्रबाधते,ब्रह्मन! मैंने महान् और अक्षय तप करके यही ज्ञान पाया है; अत: नारदजी! शोककी परिस्थिति उपस्थित होकर भी मुझे व्याकुल नहीं कर सकती
etad brahman vijānāmi mahat kṛtvā tapo 'vyayam | tena nārada samprāpto na māṃ śokaḥ prabādhate ||
“Wahai Brahmana, inilah yang aku ketahui setelah menempuh tapa yang agung dan tidak susut. Maka, wahai Nārada, sekalipun sebab dukacita muncul, kesedihan tidak mampu menundukkan atau mengusikku.”
समड़ उवाच
True understanding gained through sustained spiritual discipline (tapas) produces inner steadiness: even when grief-causing situations arise, sorrow does not dominate the mind.
A speaker addresses a Brahmin and then Nārada, stating that through great, imperishable austerity he has attained a certain knowledge, and as a result he remains unshaken by grief despite circumstances that would normally provoke it.
