Jāpakānāṃ Gatiḥ — The Destinies of Japa-Practitioners (Śānti Parva 12.190)

सभी उपायोंसे लोभ और क्रोधको जीतना चाहिये। यही ज्ञानोंमें पवित्र ज्ञान है और यही आत्मसंयम है ।। वार्यो सर्वात्मना तौ हि श्रेयोघातार्थमुच्छितौ । नित्यं क्रोधाच्छियं रक्षेत्‌ तपो रक्षेच्च मत्सरात्‌

sarvaiḥ upāyaiḥ lobhaṁ ca krodhaṁ ca jetavyam | etad eva jñāneṣu pavitraṁ jñānam etad evātmasaṁyamaḥ || vāryau sarvātmanā tau hi śreyoghātārtham ucchitau | nityaṁ krodhāc chriyaṁ rakṣet tapo rakṣec ca matsarāt ||

Bharadvāja berkata: Hendaklah seseorang menundukkan ketamakan dan kemarahan dengan segala ikhtiar. Inilah pengetahuan yang paling suci antara segala pengetahuan, dan inilah sahaja pengekangan diri yang sejati. Sesungguhnya, kedua-duanya—ketamakan dan kemarahan—wajib ditolak dengan segenap diri, kerana ia meruntuhkan kebaikan tertinggi. Maka, peliharalah kemakmuran daripada kemarahan, dan peliharalah tapa (askese) daripada iri hati.
