Educational Q&A

Even amid a war narrative, the text draws attention to the household and the aged ruler, implying that political and martial choices reverberate through families; the vulnerable—especially elders—bear emotional and social burdens that warfare creates.

Sañjaya describes the situation of his aged father, the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), noting that he is in the company of the women of the family—daughters-in-law and granddaughters-in-law—setting a scene of domestic concern and dependence in contrast to the battlefield events.
