Asita Devala Observes Jaigīṣavya’s Yogic Attainment and Chooses Mokṣa-dharma (देवल-जैगीषव्योपाख्यानम्)
तान् क्रतून् भरतश्रेष्ठ शतकृत्वो महाद्युति: । पूरयामास विधिवत् ततः ख्यात: शतक्रतु:,भरतश्रेष्ठ! महातेजस्वी इन्द्रने उन यज्ञोंको सौ बार विधिपूर्वक पूर्ण किया, इसलिये इन्द्र शतक्रतु नामसे विख्यात हो गये
tān kratūn bharataśreṣṭha śatakṛtvo mahādyutiḥ | pūrayāmāsa vidhivat tataḥ khyātaḥ śatakratuḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana berkata: Wahai yang terbaik antara keturunan Bharata, Indra yang bercahaya itu telah menyempurnakan korban-korban suci itu dengan tertib menurut aturan sebanyak seratus kali; maka sebab itulah baginda masyhur dengan gelaran Śatakratu, “yang memiliki seratus upacara.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights that disciplined, properly regulated action (vidhivat karma)—especially sacred or socially sanctioned duties—accumulates merit and establishes enduring reputation; Indra’s title ‘Śatakratu’ is presented as the fruit of repeatedly completing rites in the correct manner.
Vaiśampāyana explains the origin of Indra’s epithet: Indra completed the referenced sacrifices one hundred times, and because of this repeated, duly performed accomplishment he became famous as ‘Śatakratu.’
