Sauptika Parva, Adhyaya 8 — Dhṛṣṭadyumna-vadha and the Camp’s Nocturnal Rout

अभ्यजानादमेयात्मा द्रोणपुत्रं महारथम्‌ | अमेय आत्मबलसे सम्पन्न रणदुर्मद धृष्टद्युम्न उसके पैर लगते ही जाग उठा और जागते ही उसने महारथी द्रोणपुत्रको पहचान लिया,एतदीदृशकं वृत्तं राजन्‌ सुप्तजने विभो । उन पाण्डव आदिके समक्ष कौन उन्हें मार सकता था? साक्षात्‌ देवराज इन्द्र भी उस दशामें उनका कुछ नहीं बिगाड़ सकते थे। प्रभो! नरेश्वर! उस रात्रिमें सब लोगोंके सो जानेपर यह इस प्रकारकी घटना घटित हुई ।। ततो जनक्षयं कृत्वा पाण्डवानां महात्ययम्‌

sañjaya uvāca | abhyajānād ameyātmā droṇaputraṁ mahāratham | ameya-ātmabalasaṁpannaṁ raṇadurmadam | dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pādābhyāṁ spṛṣṭaḥ prabuddhaḥ prabuddhaś ca mahārathiṇaṁ droṇaputram abhyajānāt | etādīdṛśakaṁ vṛttaṁ rājan suptajane vibho | sākṣād devarāja indro 'pi tāṁ daśāṁ prāpya teṣāṁ kiñcid api na vyakaroṣyat | prabho nareśvara tasmin rātrau sarveṣu suptyeṣv evaṁvidhā ghaṭanā samabhavat | tato janakṣayaṁ kṛtvā pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātyayam |

Sañjaya berkata: Dhrishtadyumna—berjiwa tak terukur—terjaga sebaik sahaja kakinya disentuh; dan ketika sedar, dia segera mengenali mahāratha, putera Droṇa (Aśvatthāman), yang garang di medan perang, membusung oleh keangkuhan perang, serta dikurniai kekuatan diri yang tidak terduga. Wahai Raja, wahai yang perkasa, demikianlah peristiwa yang berlaku ketika orang ramai lena. Dalam keadaan itu, bahkan Indra sendiri, raja para dewa, tidak akan mampu menahan mereka. Maka, wahai pemerintah, pada malam itu, setelah semua tertidur, kejadian ngeri ini pun terjadi; dan kemudian, setelah melakukan pembantaian manusia, dia menimpakan bencana besar kepada para Pāṇḍava.
