Śiśupāla-vākya: Bhīṣma-nindā and the ‘Haṃsa’ Exemplum (शिशुपालवाक्यम् — भीष्मनिन्दा, हंसदृष्टान्तः)

अग्निहोत्रमुखा वेदा गायत्री छन्दसां मुखम्‌ । राजा मुखं मनुष्याणां नदीनां सागरो मुखम्‌

agnihotramukhā vedā gāyatrī chandasāṃ mukham | rājā mukhaṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ nadīnāṃ sāgaro mukham | sūryaś candramā nakṣatrāṇi grahā diśaś ca vidiśaś ca sarvaṃ teṣu pratiṣṭhitam | yathā vedeṣu agnihotram, chandaḥsu gāyatrī, manuṣyeṣu rājā, nadīṣu sāgaraḥ, nakṣatreṣu candramāḥ, tejasviṣu sūryaḥ, parvateṣu meruḥ, pakṣiṣu garuḍaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ, tathā devalokasahiteṣu sarvalokeṣu ūrdhva-adhaḥ dakṣiṇa-vāma yāvat jagadāśrayāḥ santi teṣu sarveṣu bhagavān śrīkṛṣṇa eva śreṣṭhaḥ |

Bhīṣma berkata: “Dalam Veda, Agnihotra ialah upacara yang paling utama; antara metrum, Gāyatrī yang paling utama. Antara manusia, raja ialah ketua; antara sungai dan segala perairan, lautan ialah ketua. Matahari, bulan, gugusan bintang, planet-planet, arah dan arah perantaraan—semuanya bertegak dalam tatanan kosmik itu. Sebagaimana Agnihotra dalam amalan Veda, Gāyatrī dalam metrum, raja dalam kalangan manusia, lautan dalam kalangan perairan, bulan dalam kalangan bintang, matahari dalam kalangan yang bercahaya, Meru dalam kalangan gunung, dan Garuḍa dalam kalangan burung dianggap tertinggi—demikian juga, dalam semua dunia bersama alam para dewa, pada setiap sandaran kewujudan di segala arah, Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa sahaja yang Maha Utama.”

Educational Q&A

The verse uses a chain of ‘foremost among’ examples (Agnihotra, Gāyatrī, king, ocean, moon, sun, Meru, Garuḍa) to argue that just as every domain has a recognized pinnacle, the ultimate pinnacle and support across all realms—including the gods’ realm—is Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
