इस प्रकार सूर्य और इन्द्रमें विवाद होने लगा। वे दोनों देवश्रेष्ठ वहाँ एक-एक पक्षमें खड़े थे। भारत! देवताओं और असुरोंमें भी वहाँ दो पक्ष हो गये थे ।।
sañjaya uvāca | itthaṃ sūrya-indrayor vivādo 'bhavat | tau ubhau devaśreṣṭhau tatra pratyekaṃ pakṣe sthitau | bhārata! devānām asurāṇāṃ ca tatra dvau pakṣau babhūvatuḥ || sametau tau mahātmānau dṛṣṭvā karṇa-dhanañjayau | akampanta trayo lokāḥ saha devarṣi-cāraṇāḥ ||
Sañjaya berkata: Demikianlah pertikaian antara Sūrya dan Indra pun memuncak. Kedua dewa yang paling utama itu berdiri di sana, masing-masing pada satu pihak. Wahai Bhārata, bahkan dalam kalangan para dewa dan para asura pun terbentuk dua kubu yang saling berhadapan. Melihat dua pahlawan agung—Karna dan Dhanañjaya (Arjuna)—berhimpun untuk bertempur, tiga alam bergetar, bersama para resi ilahi dan kaum Cāraṇa.
संजय उवाच

Sañjaya reports that Sūrya and Indra fall into dispute and stand on opposing sides; devas and asuras also split into factions. As Karna and Arjuna gather for their decisive battle, the three worlds tremble along with divine seers and celestial bards, underscoring the duel’s immense significance.
