Karna Reforms the Host and Multiple Duels Converge
ब्राह्मण: किल नो गेहमध्यगच्छत् पुरातिथि: । आचार ं तत्र सम्प्रेक्ष्य प्रीतो वचनमत्रवीत्,पूर्वकालमें एक ब्राह्मण अतिथिरूपसे हमारे घरपर ठहरा था। उसने हमारे यहाँका आचार-विचार देखकर प्रसन्नता प्रकट करते हुए यह बात कही--
brāhmaṇaḥ kila no geham adhyagacchat purātithiḥ | ācāraṃ tatra samprekṣya prīto vacanam abravīt ||
Karna berkata: “Pada suatu masa dahulu, seorang Brahmin—seorang tetamu dari zaman silam—pernah singgah di rumah kami. Melihat adab dan kebiasaan yang dipelihara di sana, beliau berkenan lalu mengucapkan kata-kata ini.”
कर्ण उवाच
The verse foregrounds atithi-dharma and ācāra: a household’s ethical standing is recognized through its lived conduct and hospitality, which can elicit approval even from a discerning Brahmin guest.
Karna begins a recollection: a Brahmin guest once stayed at his home, observed their household customs and behavior, became pleased, and then spoke—setting up a moral or instructive statement in the following verses.
