Even in a warrior’s arena, inner steadiness matters: when one’s cause is weakened by adharma and arrogance, confidence can shatter quickly under pressure. The verse highlights the moral and psychological cost of unrighteous ambition—fear and retreat arise when resolve is not grounded in dharma.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that a brief, seemingly unfinished fight occurs between two combatants; in that exchange, Duryodhana is hit by hundreds of arrows and then turns away and flees.
