Alāyudha’s Resolve to Confront Bhīma
मम वाक्यकरीौ वीरौ मम गौरवयन्त्रितौ । सैन्यार्णवं समुत्तीर्णो दिष्ट्या पश्यामि वामहम्
mama vākyakarī vīrau mama gauravayantritau | sainyārṇavaṃ samuttīrṇo diṣṭyā paśyāmi vām aham ||
Sañjaya berkata: “Kamu berdua, wahai wira, yang melaksanakan perintahku—terikat kepadaku oleh maruah dan didorong oleh kesetiaan. Dengan tuah yang baik, kini aku melihat kamu berdua telah menyeberangi lautan bala tentera; sesungguhnya ini suatu berkat.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical weight of honor and loyalty in a warrior culture: carrying out a superior’s command and remaining steadfast can be praised as ‘gaurava’ (a binding sense of honor). At the same time, it implicitly raises the Mahābhārata’s recurring tension between obedience to authority and the larger demands of dharma.
Sañjaya speaks to two unnamed heroes, praising them for obeying his instruction and expressing relief that they have safely come through the perilous mass of troops—likened to an ‘ocean’—and are now visible to him alive.
