वर्णतो गुणतश्चैव योनितश्वैव तत्त्वतः । सर्वमेतत्तमो विप्रा: कीर्तितं वो यथाविधि,विप्रवरो! वर्ण, गुण, योनि और तत्त्वके अनुसार मैंने आपसे तमोगुणका पूरा-पूरा यथावत् वर्णन किया
varṇato guṇataś caiva yonitaś caiva tattvataḥ | sarvam etat tamo viprāḥ kīrtitaṃ vo yathāvidhi ||
Vāyu-deva bersabda: “Wahai para brāhmaṇa, kini telah aku bentangkan kepada kamu—dengan tertib dan menurut aturan—huraian lengkap tentang tamas, dihimpunkan menurut varṇa (kedudukan sosial), menurut guṇa (sifat), menurut yoni (kelahiran/asal), dan menurut tattva (hakikat dasarnya).”
