स्थावर (वृक्ष-पर्वत आदि) जीव

vāyudeva uvāca | sthāvarāḥ (vṛkṣa-parvata-ādayaḥ) jīvāḥ, paśavaḥ, vāhanāni, rākṣasāḥ, sarpāḥ, kīṭa-pataṅgāḥ, pakṣiṇaḥ, aṇḍajāḥ prāṇinaḥ, catuṣpadāḥ, unmattāḥ, badhirāḥ, mūkāḥ tathā anye yāvantaḥ pāpamaya-rogavantaḥ (kuṣṭhina-ādayaḥ) manuṣyāḥ santi, te sarve tamoguṇe nimagnāḥ | svakarmaṇā yathā-lakṣaṇā ime durācāriṇaḥ jīvāḥ sadā duḥkhe nimagnā bhavanti | teṣāṃ cittavṛttīnāṃ pravāho nimna-daśāyāṃ gacchati, tasmāt te arvāk-srotasa iti ucyante | te tamoguṇe nimagnāḥ sarve prāṇinaḥ tāmasāḥ || 23–25 || teṣām utkarṣam udrekaṃ vakṣyāmy aham ataḥ param | yathā te sukṛtāl lokāl labhante puṇyakarmiṇaḥ ||

Vāyu berkata: “Segala makhluk seperti yang tidak bergerak (pokok, gunung dan seumpamanya), binatang, haiwan beban, rākṣasa, ular, serangga dan cacing, burung, makhluk yang lahir dari telur, haiwan berkaki empat, dan juga manusia yang gila, pekak, bisu, atau ditimpa penyakit berdosa (seperti kusta)—semuanya tenggelam dalam sifat kegelapan (tamas). Bertanda menurut hasil perbuatan mereka sendiri, makhluk yang berkelakuan buruk ini sentiasa terbenam dalam penderitaan. Oleh sebab arus kecenderungan batin mereka mengalir ke bawah menuju keadaan yang lebih rendah, mereka disebut ‘yang alirannya menghala ke bawah’ (arvāk-srotas). Semua makhluk yang tenggelam dalam tamas demikian disebut tāmasa. Sesudah itu akan aku jelaskan bagaimana mereka yang jatuh ke dalam kelahiran tamasik itu dapat bangkit dan makmur, dan bagaimana, dengan menjadi pelaku kebajikan, mereka mencapai alam-alam yang lebih tinggi.”
