Puṣkara-Śapatha Itihāsa (Agastya–Indra Dispute at the Tīrthas) | पुष्कर-शपथ-आख्यानम्

मुनिश्च स्थात्‌ सदा विप्रो वेदांश्वैव सदा जपेत्‌ । त्यागका सम्पादन ही सबसे उत्तम तपस्या है। ब्राह्मणको सदा उपवासी (व्रतपरायण), ब्रह्मचारी, मुनि और वेदोंका स्वाध्यायी होना चाहिये,ज्ञात्वा नामानि चैवैषां सर्वानेतान्‌ विनाशय । विनष्टेषु तथा स्वैरं गच्छ यत्रेप्सितं तव वृषादर्भिने कहा--यातुधानी! तुम यहाँसे वनमें जाओ और वहाँ अरुन्धतीसहित सातों ऋषियोंका, उनकी दासीका और उस दासीके पतिका भी नाम पूछकर उसका तात्पर्य अपने मनमें धारण करो। इस प्रकार उन सबके नामोंका अर्थ समझकर उन्हें मार डालो; उसके बाद जहाँ इच्छा हो चली जाना

muniś ca sthāt sadā vipro vedāṁś caiva sadā japet | tyāga-kā sampādanaṁ hi sarveṣāṁ uttamā tapasyā | brāhmaṇo hi sadopavāsī (vrata-parāyaṇaḥ), brahmacārī, muniḥ, vedānāṁ svādhyāyī ca bhavet | jñātvā nāmāni caivaiṣāṁ sarvān etān vināśaya | vinaṣṭeṣu tathā svairaṁ gaccha yatrepsitaṁ tava | vṛṣādarbhiṇe (uvāca)—yātudhāni! tvaṁ iha-sthānād vane gaccha, tatra aruṇdhatī-sahita-saptarṣīṇāṁ, teṣāṁ dāsyāḥ, tasyāś ca dāsī-pateś ca nāmāni pṛcchitvā, teṣāṁ tātparyaṁ manasi dhāraya | evaṁ sarveṣāṁ nāmnāṁ arthaṁ jñātvā tān vināśaya; tataḥ yatra icchasi tatra gaccha |

Bhīṣma berkata: “Seorang brahmin hendaklah sentiasa hidup sebagai pertapa—teguh, berdisiplin, dan terus-menerus melafazkan Veda. Pencapaian pelepasan (renunsiasi) sesungguhnya ialah tapa yang tertinggi. Maka brahmin patut sentiasa berpegang pada nazar dan puasa, memelihara brahmacarya, bersifat kontemplatif, serta tekun dalam swādhyāya Veda. Setelah mengetahui nama mereka semua, binasakanlah mereka; dan apabila mereka telah binasa, pergilah dengan bebas ke mana sahaja yang engkau ingini.”
