Offerings for Ancestors and Their Stated Results
तामुवाच ततो वल्लिर्धार्यतां धार्यतामिति । गर्भो मत्तेजसा युक्तो महागुणफलोदय:
tām uvāca tato vallīr dhāryatāṃ dhāryatām iti | garbho mat-tejasā yukto mahā-guṇa-phala-udayaḥ ||
Lalu Vallī berkata kepadanya: “Kandungilah—kandungilah sungguh. Janin ini dipenuhi tenaga berapi milikku; daripadanya akan terbit hasil yang agung, kaya dengan sifat-sifat mulia.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse emphasizes responsibility toward what has been entrusted—here, the pregnancy—because it carries potent consequences. It frames birth not merely as biological, but as ethically significant: a being endowed with extraordinary tejas is expected to yield great virtues and results, so it must be protected and sustained.
Within Bhīṣma’s narration, a figure named Vallī urges a woman to carry the pregnancy, declaring that the embryo is infused with his own tejas and will produce an exceptional outcome characterized by great qualities.
