Offerings for Ancestors and Their Stated Results
विसंज्ञा नाशकद् गर्भ वोढुमात्मानमेव च । सा तु तेज:परीतांगी कम्पयन्तीव जाह्नवी,वे अचेत हो गयीं। अतः उस गर्भको और अपने-आपको भी न सम्हाल सकीं। उनके सारे अंग तेजसे व्याप्त हो रहे थे। विप्रवर! उस समय जाह्नवी देवी उस गर्भकी शक्तिसे अभिभूत हो काँपती हुई-सी अग्निसे बोलीं--“भगवन्! मैं आपके इस तेजको धारण करनेमें असमर्थ हूँ
visaṁjñā nāśakad garbhaṁ voḍhum ātmānam eva ca | sā tu tejaḥ-parītāṅgī kampayantīvā jahnavī, ve acet ho gayīṁ | ataḥ us garbha-ko aur apne-āp-ko bhī na sambhāl sakīṁ | unke sāre aṅg tejasā vyāpta ho rahe the | vipra-vara! us samay jahnavī devī us garbha-kī śakti-se abhibhūt ho kāṁpatī huī-sī agni-se bolīṁ— “bhagavan! maiṁ āpke is teja-ko dhāraṇ karne-meṁ asamarth hūṁ”
Bhishma berkata: “Dalam keadaan tidak sedarkan diri, dia tidak mampu menanggung embrio itu, bahkan tidak mampu menegakkan dirinya sendiri. Seluruh anggota tubuhnya diselubungi tenaga yang menyala. Wahai Brahmana termulia, ketika itu dewi Jahnavi, ditundukkan oleh kuasa embrio itu dan menggigil seolah-olah berada dalam api, berkata: ‘Wahai Tuhan Yang Mulia, aku tidak mampu menampung sinar-Mu ini.’”
भीष्म उवाच
The passage highlights the ethical and spiritual idea that divine or ascetic tejas (radiant power) is not merely physical strength but a force that can overwhelm ordinary capacity; humility and truthful acknowledgment of one’s limits are themselves dharmic responses to overwhelming power.
Bhishma narrates that Jahnavi (Ganga), carrying an extraordinarily powerful embryo, becomes faint and trembles as her body is suffused with tejas; she then addresses the Lord, confessing she cannot sustain that blazing energy.
