The verse teaches that humility (not craving honor), endurance, steadfast resolve, mastery over the senses, and universal goodwill are the defining traits of the righteous; such virtues lead to a “great fruit,” i.e., the highest moral and spiritual reward.
In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. Here he enumerates the qualities of exemplary persons and affirms that those who embody these traits receive great merit and auspicious results.
