Bhīṣma uvāca: vedaśāstrāṇi sarvāṇi dharmāṃś ca manu-jeśvara | vedāṃś caturaḥ sarvān nikhilenānubuddhyase ||
Bhishma berkata: “Wahai penghulu manusia, tuanku telah memahami sepenuhnya keempat-empat Veda dan seluruh himpunan kitab suci, dan tuanku juga mengerti dengan lengkap segala prinsip dharma.”
भीष्म उवाच
That true authority in ethical instruction rests on comprehensive understanding—both of scripture (Vedas and śāstras) and of dharma’s inner principles; Bhishma frames the listener as already competent to grasp subtle moral guidance.
Bhishma, in his extended counsel during the Anushasana Parva, addresses the king and acknowledges his grasp of the four Vedas, the śāstras, and dharma—an opening move that prepares the ground for further detailed instruction on righteous conduct.
