Cause of Kalmāṣapāda’s Niyoga under a Curse
ततस्तस्मिन् गिरिश्रेष्ठे देवगन्धर्वसेविते । जग्राह विधिवत् पार्णिं तपत्या: स नरर्षभ:,तदनन्तर उन नरश्रेष्ठने देवताओं और गन्धर्वोंसे सेवित उस उत्तम पर्वतपर विधिपूर्वक तपतीका पाणिग्रहण किया
tatas tasmin giriśreṣṭhe devagandharvasevite | jagrāha vidhivat pārṇiṃ tapatyāḥ sa nararṣabhaḥ ||
Kemudian, di gunung yang unggul itu—yang sering diziarahi para dewa dan Gandharva—lelaki terunggul, laksana lembu jantan di antara manusia, melaksanakan dengan tertib upacara memegang tangan Tapati sebagai isteri, menurut adat yang ditetapkan oleh dharma dan aturan ritual.
वसिष्ठ उवाच
The verse underscores dharma through vidhivat (rule-bound) conduct: even powerful figures should formalize major life transitions—like marriage—through sanctioned rites, aligning personal desire with social and sacred order.
On a sacred, exalted mountain visited by Devas and Gandharvas, the male protagonist (referred to as nararṣabha) formally takes Tapati’s hand—i.e., completes the key marriage rite of pāṇigrahaṇa—indicating their lawful union.
