Even renowned warriors can be overtaken by fear when circumstances turn dire; the verse highlights the human cost of war through the cries of the wounded and the moral pressure such suffering places on leaders and fighters.
In the midst of a fierce clash, troops run toward the Pāṇḍavas crying out; Karṇa, badly wounded by Pāñcāla arrows, jumps from his chariot and flees. The Pāṇḍavas hear the terrifying lament of the afflicted and prepare to act.
