Vāraṇāvata-vivāsana-nīti: Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Duryodhana’s Policy Dialogue
जनमेजय उवाच कथं समभवद् द्रोण: कथं चास्त्राण्यवाप्तवान् | कथं चागात् कुरून् ब्रह्मान् कस्य पुत्र: स वीर्यवान्,जनमेजयने पूछा--ब्रह्मन! द्रोणाचार्यकी उत्पत्ति कैसे हुई? उन्होंने किस प्रकार अस्त्र-विद्या प्राप्त की? वे कुरुदेशमें कैसे आये? तथा वे महापराक्रमी द्रोण किसके पुत्र थे?
janamejaya uvāca kathaṃ samabhavad droṇaḥ kathaṃ cāstrāṇy avāptavān | kathaṃ cāgāt kurūn brahman kasya putraḥ sa vīryavān ||
Janamejaya bertanya: “Wahai Brahmana, bagaimana Droṇa terlahir? Bagaimana dia memperoleh ilmu senjata? Bagaimana dia datang kepada kaum Kuru? Dan Droṇa yang perkasa itu, anak siapakah dia?”
जनमेजय उवाच
The verse models dhārmic inquiry: before judging a person’s role in great events, one should understand their origin, training, and social connections—birth, education, and affiliations that shape conduct and destiny.
Within the frame dialogue, King Janamejaya asks the Brahmin narrator to explain Droṇa’s birth, how he mastered weapon-lore, how he entered the Kuru sphere, and whose son he was—setting up Droṇa’s backstory before his later importance in the Kuru-Pāṇḍava conflict.
