Pāṇḍu’s Marriages, Conquests, and Triumphal Return (पाण्डोर्विवाह-विजय-प्रत्यागमनम्)
भीष्मो बुद्धिमदान्महाां कुलस्यास्य विवृद्धये । साच बुद्धिस्त्वय्यधीना पुत्रि प्रापपय मां तथा
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: bhīṣmo buddhimān mahān kulasyāsya vivṛddhaye | sā ca buddhis tvayy adhīnā putri prāpaya māṃ tathā ||
Vaiśampāyana berkata: “Bhīṣma, yang bijaksana dan berhati besar, telah mengemukakan suatu rancangan demi pertumbuhan dan kelangsungan garis keturunan ini. Namun, wahai anakku, kejayaan nasihat itu berada dalam tanganmu. Maka bawalah aku ke keadaan itu—seperti yang Bhīṣma tunjukkan—agar aku dapat menyaksikan tercapainya apa yang dihajati.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights a ruler’s duty to preserve the continuity and welfare of the lineage, while also stressing that even the wisest counsel depends on the ethical agency and cooperation of others—here, the daughter’s choice is pivotal.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Bhīṣma has devised a strategy to ensure the family’s growth and survival. The speaker addresses his daughter, saying the plan’s success depends on her, and urges her to act so he can reach the intended outcome.
