Avadhūta’s Teachers: Python, Ocean, Moth, Bee, Elephant, Deer, Fish—and Piṅgalā’s Song of Detachment
पिङ्गलोवाच अहो मे मोहविततिं पश्यताविजितात्मन: । या कान्तादसत: कामं कामये येन बालिशा ॥ ३० ॥
piṅgalovāca aho me moha-vitatiṁ paśyatāvijitātmanaḥ yā kāntād asataḥ kāmaṁ kāmaye yena bāliśā
Piṅgalā berkata: Lihatlah betapa luasnya khayalanku! Kerana aku tidak mampu menundukkan fikiran, seperti orang bodoh aku menginginkan nikmat nafsu daripada lelaki yang hina.
In material existence all of the senses are attracted by different objects, and thus the conditioned soul becomes a first-class fool. The cause of material life is one’s indifference to the Absolute Truth. The conditioned soul considers himself to be the lord and enjoyer of the material world and considers the purpose of life to be sense gratification. The more one tries to enjoy the material world, the more one’s illusion increases.
This verse shows that uncontrolled mind leads to moha, making one chase kāma even from an unworthy object, resulting in suffering and regret.
She realizes her misery comes from her own uncontrolled mind and misplaced hope in a faithless lover, marking the beginning of her inner renunciation.
Examine where craving is directed toward unreliable sources of happiness, and redirect the mind through discipline, discernment, and devotion toward lasting spiritual fulfillment.
