Agni Purana — Yoga & Brahma-vidya, Shloka 5

Āgneya-Purāṇa-māhātmya

The Greatness and Self-Testimony of the Agni Purāṇa

यस्य भावो ऽखिलं विष्णुस्तस्य नो बाधते कलिः अनिष्ट्वा तु महायज्ञानकृत्वापि पितृस्वधां

yasya bhāvo 'khilaṃ viṣṇustasya no bādhate kaliḥ aniṣṭvā tu mahāyajñānakṛtvāpi pitṛsvadhāṃ

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Commentary","entry_title":"Viṣṇu-bhāva as Kali-yuga Protection Beyond Yajña and Pitṛ-svadhā","lookup_keywords":["Kali-yuga","Viṣṇu-smṛti","bhāva","mahāyajña","pitṛ-svadhā"],"quick_summary":"If one’s entire inner orientation (bhāva) is absorbed in Viṣṇu, Kali’s affliction does not touch him. The verse elevates bhakti/smṛti as a protective dharma even when major sacrifices and ancestral offerings are not performed."}

Concept: Antaḥkaraṇa-niṣṭhā in Viṣṇu (bhāva) overrides Kali-yuga doṣas and compensates for ritual non-performance.

Application: Daily Viṣṇu-smaraṇa as a minimum viable dharma: japa, nāma, dhyāna, and offering one’s intentions to Viṣṇu when rites are constrained.

FAQs

It teaches a practical Kali-yuga upāya: exclusive Viṣṇu-centered bhāva (steady devotional orientation) is presented as a protective discipline that can supersede reliance on major sacrificial rites and even ancillary ritual duties when viewed through the lens of salvific devotion.

It juxtaposes śrauta/ritual categories (mahāyajña, pitṛ-svadhā) with bhakti-soteriology, demonstrating how the Agni Purana integrates Vedic ritual culture, ancestor-rite terminology, and devotional theology into a unified guidance system for Kali-yuga practice.

The verse asserts that wholehearted devotion to Viṣṇu neutralizes the harms associated with Kali (spiritual decline, obstacles), implying that sincere God-centered bhāva functions as a primary purifier and protector even when elaborate rites are not performed.
