धर्मोपघातजश्चित्तविलासजनितस् तथा शोकः शोकाद्भवेत् स्थायी कः स्थायी पूर्वजो मतः

dharmopaghātajaścittavilāsajanitas tathā śokaḥ śokādbhavet sthāyī kaḥ sthāyī pūrvajo mataḥ

Kesedihan (śoka) terhasil daripada pelanggaran atau kecederaan terhadap dharma, dan juga timbul daripada pelbagai gelora gerak hati (citta-vilāsa). Daripada kesedihan, dikatakan lahir keadaan yang menetap (sthayin-bhāva). Maka, emosi apakah yang dianggap oleh para purba sebagai keadaan menetap yang asal?
