Śumbha–Niśumbha’s Mobilization After Devī’s Victories
Battle Muster and Omens
ततः समुत्थाय कृपाणमुज्ज्वलं स चर्म्म कण्ठीरवमूर्ध्न्यताडयत् । बिभेद तं चापि महासिनाम्बिका यथा कुठारेण तरुं तरुश्छिदः
tataḥ samutthāya kṛpāṇamujjvalaṃ sa carmma kaṇṭhīravamūrdhnyatāḍayat | bibheda taṃ cāpi mahāsināmbikā yathā kuṭhāreṇa taruṃ taruśchidaḥ
Suta Goswami (narrating the Uma-saṃhitā episode to the sages)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Bhairava
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: destructive
Ambikā’s decisive act symbolizes Śakti’s power to cut through the hardened “tree” of ego and bondage (pāśa). In Shaiva Siddhanta, liberation arises when the Lord’s grace operates through Śakti to destroy ignorance, not merely by worldly strength.
The verse highlights Shiva–Shakti unity central to Saguna worship: devotion to Shiva is inseparable from reverence to Ambikā (His power). In Linga worship, this is remembered as Pati (Shiva) and His Śakti together granting protection and the cutting away of impurities.
A practical takeaway is to meditate on the “axe-like” discernment that severs bondage while chanting the Panchakshara—Om Namaḥ Śivāya—and offering bilva leaves, cultivating inner courage and surrender to Shiva’s grace through Śakti.
