Jaṭilāvatāra-Parīkṣā: Pārvatyāḥ Tapasāṃ Parīkṣaṇam
The Jaṭilā Episode and the Testing of Pārvatī’s Austerity
ब्रह्मचारिस्वरूपेण कश्चित्त्वं धूर्त आगतः । शिवनिन्दा कृता मूढ त्वया मन्युरभून्मम
brahmacārisvarūpeṇa kaścittvaṃ dhūrta āgataḥ | śivanindā kṛtā mūḍha tvayā manyurabhūnmama
Lord Shiva (in a wrathful form addressing an offender)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Bhairava
Role: teaching
It warns that disguises and outward marks of renunciation are meaningless without inner devotion; Śiva-nindā (reviling Śiva) is a grave aparādha that binds the soul (paśu) more tightly in pāśa, obstructing grace and liberation.
Linga worship represents reverence for Śiva as the compassionate Pati accessible through saguna forms; this verse highlights that contempt toward Śiva (and by extension His symbols and worship) breaks the devotional relationship through which grace descends.
Guard speech and mind with daily japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and practice repentance (kṣamā-prārthanā) before the Śiva-liṅga; applying tripuṇḍra-bhasma and wearing rudrākṣa may be taken as supports only when joined with sincere bhakti.
