Devata

Indra (context of RV 7.31 as Indra-hymn)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (dominant meter in RV 7.31; this verse conforms to the Indra-Triṣṭubh style)

Inside Sukta 31

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct, urgent address to Indra: “we who are yours” press him forward to notice the worshipper’s need and respond with his abundant strength.

  2. Development

Praise expands Indra’s profile—mighty, wide-reaching, responsive to properly formed speech—while the hymn pivots into requests for protection from hostility, denial, and social-spiritual harm caused by blame.

  3. Climax

The hymn’s mantric apex is the assertion that seers generate brahman for Indra and that the steadfast do not violate his vratas—linking effective prayer, ethical alignment, and divine reliability.

  4. Where it settles

The petitions settle into a protective assurance: the worshipper’s kratu is placed in Indra, and the community is safeguarded through praise that accords with Indra’s law of action.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is praised as vṛṣan (the Bull), the mighty and wide-pervading lord of strength who responds to well-shaped praise (suvṛkti) and brahman, and whose vratas are not to be transgressed by the wise.

  • Inner significanceRepresents awakened force of will and courageous clarity that overcomes inner obstruction, silences self-defeating ‘hostile speech,’ and stabilizes kratu (right intention and discernment).

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Saptaṛṣi; traditional seer of Maṇḍala 7) · Foremost among the seers associated with Maṇḍala 7, celebrated for hymns that combine royal protection-themes with deep brahmanic (mantric) craft and fidelity to ṛta (cosmic order).
