Inside Sukta 168

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The Maruts are summoned as a coordinated power who move from sacrifice to sacrifice, establishing inspired thoughts and divine-minded intent.

  2. Development

Their immense range is contemplated: the poet asks where the far and near limits of their mid-world domain lie, and describes their shaking loose of what is compacted.

  3. Climax

The Maruts’ decisive action—flying forth with the ‘stone-weapon’ across the blazing surge—symbolizes the breaking open of obstruction and the clearing of passage.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn seals the relationship through a final stotra: ‘this is your chant,’ and invites them to arrive with nourishment and strengthening force for embodied life and victory.

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThe Maruts are the youthful, many-formed storm-host—loud, radiant, weapon-bearing companions of Indra—who surge with wind, thunder, and flashing brilliance, moving in disciplined bands and delighting in praise.
  • Cosmic functionThey animate the atmosphere (rajas) with wind and rain, shatter obstructions, and drive forward the life-forces that renew earth and sky, enabling fertility, movement, and victorious advance.
  • Inner significanceThey signify the dynamic powers of awakened energy—courage, breath-force, and collective resolve—that break inner inertia, clear blocked passages, and propel the seeker toward right direction and effective action.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maruts are a band of youthful storm-deities—wind, thunder, and radiant power—moving together and helping to break obstacles and bring strength and rain.
